What We All Really Need

My dad tells me that they sell caskets at Costco in L.A. Kind of a buzz-kill, don’t you think, passing by caskets on your way to buy that new video camera to catch all those memories?

Okay, so we all have needs. Some of these needs are “felt needs” and yes, they’re valid. But then there is such a thing as REAL needs. Which typically means that there are some things we like to hear, other things we should hear, but certainly things we NEED to hear.

That’s what I’m going to talk about this Sunday morning at 9:15 and 11:00, as we continue our study through Acts. Don’t miss!

Waiting and the Mystery of Unanswered Prayer

Most of us HATE to WAIT. Especially when there are serious kinds of waiting, like the single person waiting for Mr. or Mrs. Right. Or landing that much needed job. And yet, Psalm 37:7 says: “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.” Of course that’s easier said than done when we’re completely freaking out.

Being a father isn’t always easy. Right? Sometimes it feels like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. And then there always those nagging regrets and thoughts like, “Am I doing enough?”

Divorce-Proof 3: What We REALLY Want

Failed and failing marriages have lots in common. So this week, we’re going to talk about two things: What women wish men knew about about them and what men wish women knew about men. I’ve read some pop-ideas in Cosmo (okay, I bought an edition or two; sue me) or Men’s Fitness (another rich experience) but I’m not so sure what they’re reporting is consistent with what men and women REALLY want. So I’ve done some digging and I GOT THE SKINNY, so you don’t want to miss this — bring lots of friends this Sunday morning, two identical services, 9:15 and 11. Oh, and the band will rock the house.

Divorce-Proof 2: Conflict Resolution

All marriages, good and bad, deal with conflict. But great marriages learn how to approach conflict in an increasingly artful way. They learn how to fight right. This coming Sunday morning (two identical services, 9:15 or 11:00), we’re going to talk about how to negotiate and ride out the sometimes-bumpy road of conflict. Oh, and singles: I heard a statistic that 94% percent of single adults get married at least once in their lives. Engaging the Cultured, Part 2

There’s an illustration called the Sigmoid Curve. It depicts how everything in life—biological systems, institutions, organizations, civilizations and nations—how everything begins, grows, plateaus, declines and ultimately dies. Every living organism goes through this process. The Fortune 500 companies demonstrate how businesses go through this process. In physics, it’s the Second Law of Thermodynamics; in biology it’s extinction. The book of James puts it this way: What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

What is your vision for life? God invites you to join Him beyond your wildest dreams to a life that extends beyond the vanishing point, a life that eludes the Sigmoid Curve. Paul introduces this God-life to the very cultured people of Athens, a city that had it’s glory days but is on the declining side of the Curve.
